Oral Microbiome Test

Shotgun sequencing insight into the balance of your mouth’s microbes

What it is
A saliva-based analysis that uses shotgun metagenomic sequencing to profile the oral microbiome — including bacteria, archaea, and fungi. The test can identify up to ~700 microbial taxa, offering a high-resolution view of your oral ecosystem.

What it explores

  • Potential oral pathogens (25 targets) commonly discussed in research in relation to plaque, caries, gum challenges, and inflammatory patterns.

  • Opportunistic taxa (16 targets) that may overgrow under certain conditions.

  • Beneficial/commensal microbes that contribute to a balanced oral environment.

  • Functional capability patterns inferred from microbial genes (e.g., fermentation and biofilm-related pathways).

Balance over diversity
Unlike gut or vaginal microbiomes—where higher diversity is often associated with resilience—oral health research emphasises balance of microbes. For that reason, diversity scores are not reported; the focus is on patterns of balance vs. imbalance within detected species.

Reporting approach
Only detected microbes are listed in your results, helping you focus on what’s actually present rather than a generic panel.

How it helps

  • Turns complex sequencing data into clear visuals showing relative abundance and balance.

  • Supports self-led reflection on daily habits (oral hygiene routine, diet, timing of sugar/starch, hydration) that may influence your oral ecosystem.

  • Complements gut testing by highlighting the distinct role of the oral microbiome in whole-body wellbeing.

What you receive

  • A comprehensive digital report summarising detected taxa, balance indicators, potential pathogen/opportunist signals, and functional capability insights—presented in easy-to-read charts.

Good to know

  • Follow pre-collection guidance (e.g., no eating/drinking, brushing, or mouthwash for a set period) to improve sample quality.

  • Results can be influenced by recent dental proceduresantimicrobials, or oral care products.

  • Microbial presence ≠ disease; context and patterns over time matter.
