NailKey (Nail Pathogen & Microbiome Panel)
High-resolution qPCR + NGS insight for complex nail microbiology
What it is
NailKey is an advanced laboratory assessment for nail samples that looks for microbial patterns potentially associated with chronic or hard-to-resolve nail issues. It screens for both bacterial and fungal organisms, providing lab-based information that can complement clinical conversations. How it works
- qPCR Report (targeted, quantitative):
Quantifies bacterial load, detects selected bacterial and fungal targets, and screens for 17 antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes reported by the lab.
- NGS Report (broad, high-resolution):
Uses next-generation sequencing to profile a very wide range of organisms (lab panels report up to tens of thousands of microbial species/taxa), offering broader context beyond targeted assays.
What it explores
- Presence of fungal organisms commonly discussed in relation to nail problems.
- Bacterial contributors that may coexist with or mimic fungal involvement.
- AMR gene screening (qPCR) to indicate resistance markers detected by the lab in vitro.
What you receive
- A digital qPCR report (targets, quantities, AMR gene screen).
- A digital NGS report (broader organism list and relative abundances).
- Clear charts and tables to help you understand the lab findings.
Good to know
- Nail health can be influenced by collection quality, prior topical/oral antimicrobials, and recent nail treatments; follow the kit instructions carefully.
- Laboratory detection ≠ diagnosis. Some organisms can appear in healthy nails; context matters.
- AMR gene findings reflect laboratory screening and do not constitute a treatment plan.
